Illinois rapper sued for child support; health care costs

Illinois native and teen rapper Chief Keef is facing a lawsuit for unpaid child support. However, due to certain laws in Illinois, the case has somewhat of a twist to it.

At the time of conception, Keef was a minor at 15 years old. The mother of the child was also a minor. At this point she is in middle school. Reading this, one would think that since both were minors at the time of conception that no laws were broken. However, due to Illinois laws, there is an issue.

According to Illinois laws, even if a relationship is consensual, if both are under the age of consent — which is 17 — then the older person can end up facing a misdemeanor charge of criminal sexual abuse. This charge, if convicted, can result in a person having to register as a sex offender.

In this case, since two years have gone by, it does not appear that the parents of the middle school girl are going to press charges. Rather, the mother of the child just wants child support and health insurance.

Of course this is not the run-of-the-mill Illinois child support case. But, it does highlight the fact that regardless of age, when a child is involved and the parents are no longer together, child support will most likely come up.

In the state of Illinois there are statutory guidelines to determine child support. Factors such as income of the non-custodial parent, child care costs and medical expenses are often all factored into figuring out how much the non-custodial parent needs to be paying.

When it comes to child support — both for the parent paying and the parent receiving — it is important that the amount set is fair and appropriate. An attorney with experience handling these types of cases can work in a way to ensure that the best interests of the children are kept in mind when making these types of agreements.
