According to a study conducted by Swedish researchers, couples in this situation have a higher chance of getting divorced.
One of the reasons for the higher likelihood of a divorce when women begin earning more than their husbands is that it can be difficult for some men to step out of traditional gender roles. This is particularly truer for couples that maintained conventional gender roles in the early part of their marriage than for those who have a gender-equal union.
At the start of a marriage, women tend to earn less money than their spouse because of stressors related to raising young children or moving to a new area to support their husband’s career. After some time when the women have progressed in their own careers, the dynamic in the marriage could change if the women begin to earn as much or more than their husbands. Because of their thriving careers, the women may not have significant amounts of time to be the primary caregiver to the children or take care of housework, and research shows that the men are typically not inclined to contribute.
Husbands tend prioritize their own career over that of their wives and believe that they are the main breadwinner because they earn more income. If their spouse is more successful in these areas, the husband may feel threatened.
